Always On: How CJAM Supports BILA's Year-Round Programme of Events and Member Engagement

One event finishes. The next is already being promoted. Speakers need briefing. Members have questions. Registrations are coming in. A venue needs confirming. The website needs updating. And, at the same time, the Association's wider programme of committee meetings, membership administration and communications continues.

For the British Insurance Law Association (BILA), delivering value to members isn't built around one flagship moment in the calendar. It happens throughout the year.

And behind that activity is CJAM.

As BILA's association management team, we provide the constant support that helps turn an ambitious programme of lectures, seminars, networking opportunities and professional engagement into something members can participate in week after week.

What we delivered

A joined-up programme shaped around the organisation, its members and the outcomes it needed.

A Programme That Never Stands Still

BILA brings together professionals with an interest in insurance law from across the legal, insurance and academic communities, and events form an important part of how the Association shares knowledge and connects that community.

The breadth of the programme means no two events are quite the same.

During 2026 alone, BILA has delivered sessions exploring insurance and legal challenges in an evolving technology-led environment, the insurability of fines, cybersecurity, business interruption claims, fortuity, jurisdiction clauses and anti-suit injunctions, and recent developments in insurance law with the editorial team behind MacGillivray on Insurance Law.

Alongside virtual lectures, CJAM has supported a growing programme of face-to-face events at the Old Library at Lloyd's of London, giving members the opportunity not only to hear from leading specialists but to meet and continue the conversation in person.

There have also been events that take BILA beyond its usual format. In May, a joint hybrid event with UCL marked the university's bicentenary by looking back at insurance law in 1826 and considering how developments from that period helped shape insurance law and the industry today.

Each may appear as a single event in the BILA calendar. Behind every one, however, is a process of planning, coordination and communication required to make it happen.

From an Idea to a Full Room

CJAM's involvement starts long before members receive an invitation.

Working closely with BILA's Committee and event leads, our team helps coordinate the practical journey from an event being proposed through to delivery.

That can mean liaising with speakers, arranging dates, managing venues and online platforms, creating registration pages, updating the website, preparing and issuing member communications, managing bookings and responding to delegate enquiries.

For in-person events, there are the additional details that can make the difference between an event simply taking place and one that feels professionally delivered – attendee information, venue requirements, timings, guest lists, access arrangements and the many last-minute questions that inevitably arise.

Then, once one event is complete, attention turns to the next.

It's a continuous cycle and one that requires CJAM to have a close understanding of BILA, its calendar and its members.

Creating More Reasons to Connect

Not every successful BILA event takes the form of a traditional legal lecture.

In January, the BILA Young Professionals Winter Quiz brought professionals from across the London Insurance Market together at Marsh for an evening of competition and networking.

The Young Professionals programme is an important part of BILA's work to engage those building their careers within the sector, and it adds another dimension to the events CJAM supports.

From managing bookings and attendee communications to helping promote the event and supporting the practical arrangements, our role remains the same: making it easier for BILA's volunteers to create opportunities for their professional community to come together.

That ability to support different formats is important. A lunchtime webinar for specialist practitioners requires a different approach from an evening networking event, just as a hybrid academic collaboration requires different coordination from an in-person seminar at Lloyd's.

Our team adapts around the Association rather than expecting the Association to adapt around us.

The Work Between the Events

Event management is only one part of the picture.

While the next lecture is being prepared, CJAM is also providing the day-to-day secretariat support that keeps BILA moving.

Member enquiries still need answering. Committee activity needs coordinating. Communications need issuing. The website needs maintaining. Membership administration continues. BILA's relationship with the wider international AIDA community needs supporting. New opportunities need communicating to members.

It means that CJAM's relationship with BILA isn't based around individual projects with a beginning and an end.

We're there between the events too.

That continuity matters. Because our team works with BILA throughout the year, we build knowledge of the Association that makes each subsequent piece of work easier. We know the people involved, understand how the Committee works, recognise the needs of the membership and have visibility of what is coming next.

We become the central point connecting many of the moving parts.

Giving Volunteers the Space to Lead

Like many professional associations, BILA benefits enormously from the expertise and commitment of people who contribute their time alongside demanding professional careers.

The role of CJAM is not to replace that volunteer expertise. It's to make sure it can have the greatest possible impact.

By taking responsibility for the organisation, administration and communication surrounding BILA's activities, we give Committee members and speakers more time to concentrate on the content, conversations and professional issues that matter to the Association.

A Committee member shouldn't need to worry about whether delegates have received joining instructions while preparing to chair an important discussion.

A speaker shouldn't need to manage registrations.

And BILA's leadership shouldn't have to choose between developing the Association and keeping on top of its day-to-day administration.

That's where a dedicated association management team makes the difference.

More Than the Events You See

Look at BILA's events calendar and you'll see an active professional association bringing its community together throughout the year.

You'll see webinars examining emerging areas of insurance law, respected practitioners sharing the latest legal developments, academics bringing new perspectives, face-to-face discussions at Lloyd's and opportunities for younger professionals to build their networks.

What you don't necessarily see is everything required to keep that programme moving.

That's the role CJAM is proud to play.

We provide the continuity behind the calendar, the organisation behind the events and the day-to-day support behind the Association.

Because effective association management isn't about appearing when there's a major event to deliver.

It's about being there every day, making sure the next opportunity for members is already taking shape.
