Dear Supporters,
Welcome to winter, and another busy month at TyreSafe – here’s a roundup of the past month’s highlights and activities.

Tyre Safety Gains National Focus in RoSPA’s Accident Prevention Strategy
|
For the first time in its 100-year history, the National Accident Prevention Strategy includes tyres as a critical focus, recognising vehicle defects as an underappreciated cause of road collisions.
This report demonstrates the urgent need for public education and enforcement on tyre safety. TyreSafe supports the Strategy’s recommendations and the proposed creation of a Road Safety Investigation Branch to address severe incidents caused by vehicle defects.
Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe Chair, said, “The inclusion of tyres in the National Accident Prevention Strategy and focus on vehicle defects represents a pivotal shift in road safety policy. Tyres are the only contact point between a vehicle and the road; their condition is paramount. We welcome the proposal to establish the RSIB, to better investigate vehicle defects in serious incidents and urge continued collaboration to educate drivers and enforce regulations.”

We’re bringing festive cheer with a crucial safety message for a second year running through its ‘Keep Your Tyres in Good ‘Elf’ campaign this December. The charming initiative features Santa’s elves performing a range of tyre checks and providing fun and engaging reminders about the importance of road safety during the festive period.

TyreSafe attends the RAC Foundation’s Winter Reception
|
TyreSafe were invited to attend the RAC Foundation’s ‘Winter Reception’ at the RAC club in London last night. The RAC foundation is an organisation that supports innovative transport research, advocating for policies relating to roads and their users. This event is attended by all the key road safety organisations, influencers, and government policy makers. For TyreSafe to be invited to this prestigious event, shows just how far we have come in the last 18 months. Our Chair, Stuart Lovatt, was able to take the opportunity to talk to the new Minister for the Future of Roads (which includes road safety), Lillian Greenwood. They discussed the importance of including tyre safety in the new Road Safety Strategy , which is currently being developed by the DfT (following its recent inclusion in RoSPA’s National Accident Prevention Strategy). An incredible opportunity to position tyres at the heart of the road safety conversation.

TyreSafe Supports National Highways Winter TRIP Campaign
|
We’re proud to support National Highways’ winter TRIP campaign, which urges road users to “Top Up, Rest, Inspect, Prepare’ to have a safe journey during the more challenging road conditions that occur during the winter months. With tyre checks a vital component of the ‘Inspect’ campaign message, we’d like to urge road users to check their tyres at least once a month, every month, and before long journeys. With National Highways research indicating that “21% of drivers who have broken down on the motorway think it could have been avoided if they’d conducted proper tyre checks before starting their journey”, we’re keen to support road users in performing these basic tyre inspections.

Home Safely for Winter Campaign Still Available
|
As the winter months bring more challenging driving conditions like heavy rain, sleet, snow, and high winds, TyreSafe has launched the ‘Home Safely for Winter’ campaign. This initiative calls on road users to ACT on tyre safety, a small but essential step that could mean the difference between arriving safely and facing hazardous incidents on the road. The full suite of assets is available to download throughout the winter months to support and raise awareness of the importance of tyre maintenance during the more challenging driving conditions winter brings.
Assets for businesses and road users are available for download from the resources section of the site.

On the Ground – TyreSafe attends OpenReach
|
Last week, we attended the BT Openreach Road Safety Event in Bolton. As one of the exhibitors, we engaged with delegates about the critical importance of regular tyre checks. Attendees were from the Complex Engineering Division (civils, fibre and Ethernet engineers) where occupational road risk is recognised as their biggest risk. As well as the safety presentations and thought-provoking human interest stories, they also conducted vehicle inspection checks which included weight / overloading and tyre checks.
It was a fantastic opportunity to promote safer tyre safety practices on such a significant scale, with OpenReach operating the second largest fleet in the UK, consisting of over 27,000 commercial vehicles (not including cars)
