TyreSafe and Staffordshire County Council Unite to Drive Home Tyre Safety Message

TyreSafe is pleased to welcome Staffordshire County Council as its latest local authority partner, further strengthening the national charity’s expanding network of regional supporters committed to promoting vital tyre safety messages to communities across the UK.

This partnership is a timely and important step in raising awareness across Staffordshire about the dangers of worn and illegal tyres—whether people are driving for work or leisure, on two wheels,  four or more.

Staffordshire falls within National Highways Area 9, where TyreSafe’s 2023 tread depth survey found that 20.3% of tyres on cars and light commercial vehicles were below the legal tread depth limit at the point of replacement. Alarmingly, an additional 40% of tyres were recorded as being between 2mm and 1.6mm—just above the legal minimum, highlighting the urgent need for continued education and intervention. This survey is set to be repeated this year, to give an even more current benchmark regarding the state of the nation’s tyres, region by region.

Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe Chair, said “We are delighted to welcome Staffordshire County Council as a new TyreSafe supporter. With such a concerning level of illegal and borderline tyres in the region, this partnership plays a crucial role in spreading awareness and helping road users understand the safety risks associated with poor tyre maintenance. Local authorities like Staffordshire are key to reaching road users where they live and work, and we’re excited to work together on this vital road safety mission.”

Through this partnership, TyreSafe and Staffordshire County Council will collaborate on campaigns, events, and educational initiatives designed to improve knowledge and influence safer tyre maintenance habits.

Martin Byrne, Compliance Officer, Economy, Infrastructure and Skills, Staffordshire County Council, added,  Dave Atkinson, Assistant Director for Connectivity and Sustainability at Staffordshire County Council, added,  “Staffordshire County Council is pleased to join forces with TyreSafe to support this important cause.

“We are committed to improving road safety across our county and recognise that tyre condition plays a vital role. By raising awareness, we aim to encourage all road users—whether on personal or business journeys—to carry out regular checks and ensure their tyres are safe and legal.”

With more than one in five tyres in the region found to be illegal at replacement, this partnership aims to help turn the tide and promote safer roads for everyone in Staffordshire.
