Motorhome Tyre Pressure

Correct tyre inflation pressure is one of the most vital aspects of motorhome tyre maintenance. It directly impacts handling, braking, fuel efficiency, and the lifespan of your tyres.

Why are tyres important?

Finding the Right Pressure

Your Vehicle’s Handbook is Key – The correct inflation pressure for your motorhome’s tyres will always be shown in your vehicle’s (or chassis) handbook. This is the definitive source for your specific vehicle and load requirements. Always adhere to these recommended pressures.

Don’t Guess – Never guess tyre pressures. Under-inflation or over-inflation can both lead to significant problems. Do not exceed the maximum cold inflation pressure marked on the tyre sidewall.

Special Considerations for CP Tyres and Load Distribution

  • CP Tyres in Single Fitment (Rear Axle) – If your motorhome has CP-type tyres fitted as single wheels on the rear axle, they generally need to be inflated to a higher inflation pressure (5.5 bar or 80 psi). This increased pressure helps compensate for the severe conditions of potentially unequal load distribution often found on the rear of motorhomes. However, it’s crucial to understand that this higher pressure does not increase the maximum load capacity of the tyre itself. The tyre’s load capacity is still defined by its Load Index.
  • CP Tyres in Dual Wheel Fitment – If your motorhome uses CP-type tyres in a dual wheel fitment (two tyres side-by-side on one side of an axle), a pressure increase is not required beyond what’s indicated for dual fitment. The tyre’s load capacity in this configuration is shown by the “load index” marked on the sidewall specifically for dual wheel fitment. If some CP-type tyres don’t carry a specific “load index” for dual wheel fitment, the axle load capacity is calculated as 1.85 times that of a single wheel fitment.
  • Consistency Across an Axle –  For safety and optimal handling, tyre pressures across an axle should always be equal.

Tyre Valves

Tyre valves must be suitable for the inflation pressures and for the wheels, and must be in good condition. Metallic or special high pressure valves are normally required with CP-type tyres. Seek the advice of a tyre specialist.

Motorhome Tyre Inflation Pressure Advice

You should regularly check your motorhome tyres and tyre pressure ahead of any journey. Inflating your motorhome tyres to the correct pressure is a crucial part of ensuring your vehicle is safe to drive. As a motorhome owner, you may want to consider carrying a tyre inflator onboard, as not all car or petrol station airlines will be able to reach the required pressure for your motorhome tyres.
