Working Together for Safer Roads

At TyreSafe, we believe that achieving Vision Zero – a future with zero harm to road users on the UK’s roads due to illegal and poorly maintained tyres – is a shared responsibility.

This page is dedicated to our invaluable partners and the wider UK road safety community, providing a central hub for collaboration, resources, and shared goals.

We are proud to work alongside a diverse network of organisations, all united by a common commitment to making Britain’s roads safer. From local authorities and enforcement bodies to research institutions and industry leaders, our collective efforts amplify our impact and drive meaningful change.

Our Shared Vision: Zero Harm from Tyres

TyreSafe’s mission is clear: to empower all road users with tyre safety knowledge to encourage a change in behaviour, which in turn will reduce incidents related to illegal and poorly maintained tyres.

Since our inception, TyreSafe’s activities have helped reduce the number of tyre-related incidents each year and continue to contribute to a reduction in casualties on our roads. We are a signatory to the European Commissions’ ‘European Road Safety Charter’ and the United Nations ‘Decade of Action for Road Safety,’ and we are proud to have twice won the prestigious ‘Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.’

The Critical Case for Action

The statistics paint a stark picture, underscoring the vital importance of our work

  • Over 6 million tyres in the UK have illegal tread each year, potentially leading to significant fines and penalty points.
  • In 2023, there were 6,316 convictions for defective tyres, with a five-year average of 6,502 annually.
  • Over 2 million MOT failures occur each year due to tyre defects, with one million classified as dangerous – making tyres the primary cause of MOT failures in the first seven years of a vehicle’s life.
  • Shockingly, an average of 152 people are killed or seriously injured in incidents related to defective tyres each year over the last five years, a figure on par with mobile phone-related incidents. The 2023 figures documented a 29% rise in KSI casualties compared to 2022.
  • One in five vehicle breakdowns on motorways and A roads result from tyre defects, equating to approximately 50,000 breakdowns annually on the motorway network alone.

Our Approach: Vision Zero & The Safe System

TyreSafe’s work is consistent with both the internationally recognised Vision Zero strategy, whose goal is eliminating all road deaths and serious injuries, and the accepted principles of the ‘Safe System Approach,’ which focuses on designing a forgiving road system that protects road users, even when mistakes are made. We seek to target all road users in our efforts to raise awareness and promote positive behavioural change.

Collaborating for Impact

Our remarkable achievements in promoting tyre safety are a direct result of our strategic partnerships and collaborations. TyreSafe has forged strong relationships with key road safety organisations, leveraging their expertise to develop targeted campaigns for specific motorist groups. We actively engage with organisations representing diverse road users, including motorcyclists, caravan and motorhome groups, driving instructors, and the agricultural and farming community, among many others. This allows us to tailor our messaging and educational materials to address unique challenges and safety concerns faced by every road user.

We work with over 130 governmental, not-for-profit, road safety organisations, enforcement bodies, and local authorities, and are proud to have the support of major tyre manufacturers, retailers, wholesalers, associated equipment suppliers, and vehicle manufacturers.

Our Work in Action

We educate and inform key target audiences, opinion formers, and policymakers on current legislation covering tyre safety, corporate responsibility, and duty of care in road safety. Our campaigns and communications raise driver awareness of tyre safety issues and promote positive behavioural change among all road users.

Driving for Work
