NTTA Launches Groundbreaking Trailer Hire Insurance Scheme

The Insurance Product is Now Available to NTTA Members With Tyre Safety as a Key Element

TyreSafe is proud to spotlight the National Trailer and Towing Association’s (NTTA) brand-new Trailer Hire Insurance scheme, created exclusively for NTTA members. This marks the UK’s first and only insurance product tailored specifically for trailer hire businesses, and significantly, it recognises tyre condition as a critical component of cover.

Developed in direct response to long-standing industry demand, the new policy provides flexible and intelligent cover for trailers during hire periods—activating automatically using geo-fencing technology. Importantly, the insurance extends to third-party liability, even when the trailer is not attached to a towing vehicle, and offers usage-based reporting on a monthly basis.

As a proud TyreSafe member, NTTA’s commitment to tyre safety is embedded in the rollout of this scheme. Not only must trailers be fitted with trackers to qualify for cover, but the policy also includes tyre cover, reinforcing the importance of regular tyre checks and maintenance.

Stuart Lovatt, Chair of TyreSafe, said, “Tyres are all too often the overlooked safety critical component when it comes to trailers—yet they are absolutely vital in ensuring roadworthiness. This new scheme from NTTA is a step forward for the industry, recognising tyre condition as an essential part of risk management and road safety. We commend NTTA for leading the way and making tyre safety part of the insurance conversation.”

Designed for trailer hire businesses operating across the UK and Europe, the scheme also ensures that NTTA members are equipped with the resources to share best practice advice on both trailer tyres and the towing vehicles themselves—whether customers are hiring for work or leisure.

Sarah Smithurst MBE, Business Development Manager at the NTTA, added, “We’re incredibly proud to offer this insurance exclusively to NTTA members. Not only does it bring long-overdue flexibility and reassurance to trailer hire businesses, but it actively promotes better safety standards—including tyre care. Working alongside TyreSafe means we can help keep more road users informed, empowered, and ultimately safer on the roads.”

As part of this joint commitment, TyreSafe will soon launch a dedicated suite of towing safety materials, including tailored guidance for those towing for work, leisure, or personal use. These will help reinforce safe towing practices across the UK, providing practical support on trailer and towing vehicle tyre checks, pressure, load handling, and tread depth.
