TyreSafe and National Young Riders Forum Unite to Promote Tyre Safety for Young Riders

TyreSafe has joined forces with the National Young Riders Forum (NYRF) to launch a dedicated tyre safety campaign for young riders, set to roll out in June. The initiative will coincide with the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s (NPCC) annual two-wheel operation, aiming to instil essential tyre maintenance habits among young riders at the very start of their riding journey.

The NYRF is a collective of road safety professionals from across the UK, bringing expertise from local authority road safety teams, Safer Roads Partnerships, the National Motorcycle Council (NMC), the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG), police forces, fire and rescue services, and the DVSA. The forum specifically focuses on young riders aged 16 to 24 who operate powered two-wheelers up to 125cc—one of the most vulnerable groups on UK roads.

Why Young Riders?

For many, a motorcycle is the first motorised vehicle they ride on public roads, making them particularly vulnerable due to a lack of experience, increased risk-taking behaviours, and various external influences. Since the NYRF’s formation in 2019, its members have worked to better understand this group and develop targeted safety interventions.

TyreSafe and NYRF’s campaign will deliver clear, engaging messaging tailored to young riders, ensuring they understand the role of tyres in keeping them safe. The campaign will promote TyreSafe’s ACT message, which encourages riders to check:

  • Air pressure – Maintaining the correct tyre pressure for grip, stability, and control.
  • Condition – Looking for cracks, embedded objects, or other signs of damage.
  • Tread – Ensuring tyres have legal and safe tread depth for effective braking and handling.

Stuart Lovatt, Chair of TyreSafe, said, “This partnership is a vital step in ensuring young riders develop strong tyre safety habits from the very beginning of their riding careers. Motorcycles offer independence and freedom, but they also require an understanding of basic maintenance to keep riders safe. With the right tyre safety knowledge, young riders can reduce their risk and stay in control on the road.”

Heidi Duffy MBE, Facilitator of the National Young Riders Forum, added,
“Young riders are one of the most at-risk groups on UK roads, and it’s crucial that we reach them with safety messaging that resonates. By working with TyreSafe, we’re making sure they have the essential knowledge to check their tyres, understand their importance, and stay safe on two wheels. This campaign is about giving them the best start possible as responsible road users.”

By working together, TyreSafe and NYRF are committed to improving tyre safety awareness among young riders, helping to prevent avoidable incidents and supporting them as they gain experience on the road.
