Storm Éowyn Sparks Tyre Safety Call to Action

With Storm Éowyn set to bring disruptive winds of up to 80mph, heavy rain, and even snow in parts of the UK, TyreSafe, the UK road safety charity dedicated to raising awareness of tyre maintenance, is urging all road users to prioritise tyre safety ahead of the weekend’s unsettled weather.

The Met Office has issued Yellow Severe Weather Warnings for Northern Ireland, northern England, northwestern Wales, and western Scotland, with further updates expected. The storm will bring challenging driving conditions, including poor visibility, standing water, and the risk of debris on the roads, making well-maintained tyres essential for safety.

According to a recent survey conducted by TyreSafe and the RAC, only one in three drivers check their tyre tread every month. In addition, a recent study by TyreSafe reveals that there are approximately 6 million tyres on the UK’s roads that are illegal at any one time, causing additional risk, particularly in treacherous conditions.

Storms present numerous hazards for drivers, including the risk of aquaplaning, as tyres with low tread or underinflated tyres struggle to displace water effectively, increasing the likelihood of losing control. Strong winds can scatter branches and debris across roads, posing a significant risk of punctures. Additionally, icy patches and standing water on untreated surfaces demand tyres with adequate tread depth to maintain grip and ensure safety.

Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe Chair, said: “Storm Éowyn reminds us how critical tyre safety is in extreme weather. Tyres are your vehicle’s only point of contact with the road, and worn or underinflated tyres will significantly reduce grip, increase braking distances, and heighten the risk of losing control on wet, icy, or debris-strewn surfaces. Drivers must act now to ensure their tyres are ready to face these conditions with the optimum safety and performance.”

Remember to ACT

TyreSafe recommends checking the following one a month, every month and before long journeys:

Air Pressure – Ensure tyres are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended levels.

Condition: – Look for cuts, bulges, or objects lodged in the tread. If in doubt, consult a tyre professional.

Tread Depth – The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. For wet and stormy conditions, 3mm or more is advised for optimal grip.

Road users are urged to take five minutes to inspect their tyres before hitting the road. For those towing trailers, caravans, or horseboxes, extra care should be taken to ensure both vehicle and trailer tyres are roadworthy.
