National Pothole Day – Check Your Tyres After Impacts
|
On National Pothole Day, we reminded road users to inspect their tyres after hitting a pothole to prevent incidents.
As part of the Pothole Partnership, The AA can reveal that pothole related incidents fell by 0.67% in 2024 when compared to the previous year. However, 2024 figures are still the third highest since 2017, with an estimated 1700 road users facing damage to their vehicles as a result of road defects.
In 2024, the AA handled 643,318 incidents of tyre, wheel, steering, and suspension damage caused by potholes, signifying a substantial impact on approximately 2 million vehicles nationwide due to inadequate road maintenance. Potholes can cause unseen damage to tyres and wheels, putting drivers, passengers, and other road users at risk.

February marks the launch of TyreSafe’s ‘Love Your Tyres’ campaign, urging all road users to show their tyres some much-needed attention. Centered around the ACT acronym—Air pressure, Condition, and Tread—the campaign emphasises simple steps for tyre safety. Road users are encouraged to check their tyres regularly and ensure they meet the essential safety standards.
Campaign assets, including posters, social media graphics, and video content, are now available in the resources area of the TyreSafe website. These materials are designed to help individuals and organisations alike spread the message of tyre safety during the month of love.

TyreSafe Partners with Vandura for Data-Driven Insights
|
Our collaboration with Vandura, developers of the Verifleet platform, has uncovered critical trends in MOT tyre-related failures, highlighting the growing importance of proactive tyre maintenance.
Their recent study using Verifleet’s expert insights highlights concerning trends and the growing need for improved tyre safety education.
The study, which analysed five years of DVSA “Light Vehicle” MOT history data, reveals a gradual decline in overall MOT failure rates but a worrying increase in tyre-related failures, particularly those linked to previously ignored advisories. This critical evidence further demonstrates the urgent need for road users to take proactive measures to maintain tyre safety before minor issues escalate into safety-critical failures.
Vandura’s data-driven approach examined patterns in tyre advisories and failures from 2019 to 2024.
