Spring Forward with Tyre Safety – Essential Checks for Stored Vehicles
|
 |
As spring arrives, TyreSafe is urging drivers to perform vital tyre checks before bringing seasonal vehicles like caravans, trailers, horseboxes, motorcycles, and motorhomes back onto the road.
Vehicles stored over winter are at higher risk of tyre damage – including cracking, flat-spotting, sidewall deterioration, and dangerously low pressures. Recent National Highways data shows a sharp rise in tyre-related breakdowns among towed vehicles, with 1,544 tyre-related incidents recorded in 2024, a 6.8% increase compared to 2022.
TyreSafe recommends:
- Visually inspect for cracks, bulges, or cuts.
- Check tyre pressures against vehicle guidelines.
- Measure tread depth (using a tread gauge or 20p test).
- Remove debris from the tread.
- Check tyre age using the DOT code – and replace tyres over 10 years old, or inspect tyres over 5 years old carefully.
“Tyres on stored vehicles may look fine at a glance but could hide serious dangers,” warned Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe Chair.
TyreSafe continues to encourage all drivers to ACT: check Air pressure, Condition, and Tread – to stay safe as they hit the road this spring and summer.

New Collaboration with NFU Mutual to Improve Rural Road Safety
|
TyreSafe is proud to announce a new partnership with NFU Mutual, aiming to enhance tyre safety awareness among rural communities — a group at heightened risk on UK roads.
In 2023, there were 70% more deaths on rural roads compared to urban highways.
Through this collaboration, TyreSafe and NFU Mutual will deliver tyre safety messages via NFU Mutual’s national agency network, encouraging countryside drivers to ACT and prevent incidents before they happen.

NTTA Launches UK’s First Trailer Hire Insurance Scheme with Tyre Safety at Its Core
|
The National Trailer and Towing Association (NTTA) has launched a groundbreaking Trailer Hire Insurance scheme exclusively for its members—the UK’s first insurance product tailored specifically for trailer hire businesses.
The policy features automatic activation via geo-fencing, third-party liability cover, and usage-based monthly reporting. Critically, tyre condition is a key requirement for cover, reinforcing the importance of regular tyre maintenance. TyreSafe Chair Stuart Lovatt praised the move, calling it a major step in recognising tyres as an essential part of trailer safety and risk management.
The insurance is available for trailers hired across the UK and Europe and aims to promote safer towing standards through NTTA members.
In partnership with NTTA, TyreSafe will soon launch a dedicated suite of towing safety materials to support safe practices for both business and leisure users.
